ART FAIR

Art Basel Paris 2026

Grand Palais, Paris | Booth B51

At Booth B51, Mai 36 Galerie brings together historical positions and a younger generation of artists.

A dedicated room is devoted to artists’ artists, figures whose work has become an essential reference for others: Rémy Zaugg

(1943–2005), John Baldessari (1931–2020), Matt Mullican (b. 1951), Robert Ryman (1930–2019) and Peter Hujar (1934–1987). Across painting, conceptual practice or photography, their work questions how we see, read and make images.

At the centre of the booth is the work of Irma Blank (1934–2023), with a focus on her Radical Writings, begun in 1983. Born in Germany, Blank moved to Italy in 1955 and later settled in Milan. There she developed a body of asemic writing in which the written sign is freed from meaning.

The gallery highlights the painting Lo mejor y lo peor de F.G. (2019) by Flavio Garciandía (b. 1954), one of the leading Cuban artists of his generation and a key figure in the landmark exhibition Volumen Uno (Havana, 1981). The work coincides with his exhibition held at the Brownstone Foundation, Paris, on view until November.

The exterior wall brings together vintage prints by Luigi Ghirri (1943–1992) from two of his central bodies of work, Kodachrome (1970–1978) and Paesaggio italiano (1980–1992).

Alongside these historical figures, the booth introduces the newest artists in the gallery’s programme, Poppy Jones (b. 1985), Jacopo Benassi (b. 1970), Leon Xu (b. 1995), Maia Ruth Lee (b. 1983), and Raphael Hefti (b. 1978), each showing new work.
