Flavio Garciandía – Breton at the Frontier

Espace Brownstone, in collaboration with Galerie Mai 36, is pleased to announce Breton at the Frontier, Flavio Garciandía’s first solo exhibition in Paris. Bringing together works spanning the past three decades, the exhibition highlights the practice of one of Cuba’s most influential living artists and a key figure in the development of Latin American conceptual painting.⁠

The exhibition takes its title from one of Garciandía’s recurring strategies: inventing titles around events that never actually happened. Over the years, his works have imagined encounters and gestures involving figures such as Brice Marden, Barnett Newman, John Baldessari and Yves Klein. Drawing on Marcel Duchamp’s idea of the title as an essential component of the artwork, Garciandía uses these fictional narratives to create an ironic space between Latin American culture and the history of Western art.⁠

A central figure of the Cuban avant-garde of the 1980s, Garciandía belonged to a generation seeking alternatives to socialist realism and developing a critical position towards dominant Western artistic models. His practice emerged from that tension, turning cultural references and art history into material for irony and reinterpretation.⁠
