Jitka Hanzlová – Identities
Opening July 11
In 1982, Jitka Hanzlová fled the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic to West Germany, where she studied photography in Essen. Her biography shapes the central themes of her work: exile, memory, and identity.
The ALBERTINA exhibition features ten of her most important series: Rokytnik (1990–1994) is dedicated to the artist's home village of the same name, and Forest (2000–2005) to the forest of her childhood. Later, she created portrait series in urban settings, such as Inhabitants (1994–1996) and Female (1997–2000), which explore the relationship between the individual and their environment.
Hanzlová, born in 1958, is one of the most internationally renowned contemporary photographers. She received the European Photography Award in 1995 and the Paris Photo Prize for Contemporary Photography in 2007. The ALBERTINA Museum presents Hanzlová's first solo museum exhibition in Austria.
The exhibition will be on display from July 11 to October 26, 2025.
