Magnus Plessen
Magnus Plessen is one of the foremost German painters of his generation. Magnus Plessen worked for several years as a photographer and filmmaker before turning to painting in the year 2000. Plessen's paintings are distinguished by an independent composition technique and a reduced visual language that are increasingly attracting the attention of the international art scene. His handling of space involves a remarkable capacity to condense and flatten the spatiality he conveys. The broad stroke of the palette knife creates an intriguing play of colour and the appeal of his paintings lies in the transition from colour-play to planarity to the edge of the boundary between the abstract and the figurative – all heightened by a brushwork that is closer to drawing than paiting. The bold contours and fields often create angular forms that follow a sweeping line, lending the images a rhythm and structure that makes them, quite literally, fields of observation.
